Steel and timber design to BS449/BS5268: steel beams. timber beams,
stanchions, timber posts and studs and flitch beams.
- Do I need to enter the self weight of a beam? Yes: the
usual practice is to enter a nominal UDL of (say) 0.5 for smaller steel beams
and 1.0 for larger ones.
- What's a PFC? Current steel data files include
additional section types. PFC stands for Parallel Flange Channel, a channel
section in which the inner and outer faces of the flanges are parallel. See SCI
Publication 210: Parallel Flange Channels - Section Properties and Member
Capacities, 1996.
- ... and an IPE or HE? These are Euronorm (formerly DIN
sections, the equivalent of UB's and UC's
Steel design to BS5950-1: 2000: beams, stanchions, simple
connections and beam web openings.
- Do I need to enter the self weight of a beam? Yes: the usual
practice is to enter a nominal UDL of (say) 0.5 for smaller steel beams and 1.0
for larger ones.
- What's a destabilising load? As an unrestrained beam is
loaded it tends to twist. A non-destabilising load (such as a concrete floor
bearing on the top flange will oppose such rotation. A destabilising load, such
as a free-standing masonry panel, will tend to exacerbate it.
- What's a SFB ... and an ASB? A SFB (Slimflor Fabricated
Beam) former comprises a UC section with a plate projecting 100mm either side
welded on to the lower flange. An ASB (Asymmetric Beam) section is a rolled I
section with the bottom flange 110mm wider than the top flange.
- My local steel stockholder hasn't heard of section size
xxxx The section sizes and data in
our data file are taken from the 'Blue Book'. You should note that some
sections are subject to limited availability and/or are only rolled in S275 or
S355 grade steel, not both.
Checking of buildings for compliance with the UK Building
Regulations Part L (E&W) and Part J (Scotland) Approved Documents 2002
edition, SAP-2001 energy rating and Carbon Index calculation.
- What do I do about party walls and floors? Where the wall or
floor separates your building from another one that would be expected to be
heated you ignore it. It may well be the case that an intermediate floor flat
has one or two external walls only and no floors or roofs.
- All my Construction Library items have disappeared: help!
SeeFixing a corrupted Construction Library
(SHW.EMD) file
- How do I transfer my Construction Library to another
computer? On your current computer select Construction, Save As.
You will be asked for a file name - if you are copying it to a floppy disk
enter A:\shw.emd (case immaterial) and press
'Save'. When asked whether you want to change your construction library file
name answer 'No'. On your new computer install SuperHeat if you have not
already done so. Start SuperHeat and select Configuration, Information
and note the Construction Library filename and location. Close SuperHeat
and copy your saved file to this location, answering 'Yes' if asked whether to
overwrite the existing file
